Collecting primary data remotely on behalf of Fairtrade

Fairtrade promotes fair trade around the world. In 2020, we were commissioned by the organisation to look at sugar cane and cane sugar production in various countries – from Mauritius to El Salvador.

Specifically, the goal was to create greenhouse gas and water balances. To calculate footprints – be it CO2 or water – we use primary data from the respective farms whenever possible. If we cannot be on site, we train farmers remotely to generate reliable data.

For Fairtrade, we worked completely remotely and were able to conduct comprehensive sector and country studies. We used our SMImonitor tool for this.

Greenhouse gases, grey water, blue water and green water: environmental aspects that came into play in the analysis.

SMImonitor supports data collection

2020 was the year of video conferencing, chats and digital collaboration tools. Our survey tool SMImonitor also enabled us to collect high quality data for our clients during the Covid-19 pandemic.

For Fairtrade, we trained local leaders through digital workshops and created an understanding of the importance of valid data for the project. Thanks to SMImonitor, it was easy for the companies to enter their data into the questionnaire and send it to us.

The answers were automatically collated in a dashboard in real time. This allowed us to evaluate them as usual, even though we were not on site to collect the data.
